Most people jump straight into rendering without understanding construction. That's why their drawings look flat or wonky when they try different angles.
This course focuses on the fundamentals that matter: how to break complex subjects into simple shapes, control line weight for clarity, and render basic forms so they feel three-dimensional. You'll work through structured exercises—cylinders, boxes, organic forms—until these concepts become muscle memory.
What you'll actually do
Each week includes demonstration videos and specific assignments. Draw 50 cylinders in perspective. Construct 20 different objects from geometric primitives. Practice hatching until your pen control is consistent.
We cover observation skills too—measuring angles, comparing proportions, seeing negative space. These aren't abstract concepts; they're practical tools that make drawing from reference or imagination more accurate.
The goal isn't to copy my style. It's to build a visual library and hand control that lets you develop your own.
By week eight, you'll notice the difference when constructing characters, objects, or environments. Things sit in space properly. Proportions hold up under scrutiny.
Learning Journey
Course Structure
Eight weeks of focused practice, building from basic mark-making to complex form rendering.
-
Lines and Control
Confident mark-making, line weight variation, and hatching techniques. Exercises: 100 straight lines, contour studies, pressure control drills
-
Shapes and Simplification
Breaking subjects into circles, triangles, rectangles. Visual simplification strategies. Assignments: 30 everyday objects reduced to flat shapes
-
Basic Perspective
One and two-point perspective for boxes and cylinders. Horizon lines and vanishing points. Practice: 50 boxes in space, cylinder studies
-
Form and Volume
Rendering spheres, cubes, and cylinders with value. Cross-contour lines. Studies: Form rendering in different lighting conditions
-
Organic Forms
Applying construction to natural objects. Combining geometric and organic shapes. Work: Plant studies, fruit, fabric folds
-
Proportion and Measurement
Comparative measurement, sighting techniques, checking angles. Exercises: Still life accuracy studies
-
Complex Objects
Constructing machinery, furniture, vehicles from basic forms. Integration week
-
Applied Construction
Character construction, environmental sketching, building your reference library. Final project: Fully constructed illustration from imagination
